Tsavo East National Park Details

A word about Tsavo East Geography

The Tsavo East safari is one of those wildlife safaris that a tourist must experience when he or she comes to Kenya. It takes place in the Tsavo East National Park, one of the largest parks in Kenya and is a continuation of the smaller Tsavo west National park.

The park is 13,747 square Kilometers and it is located to the east of the popular Nairobi/Mombasa highway and the distance from both cities is almost equal. If you want to see the unharmed areas of Kenya this is where you want to be once you enter the country. Tsavo East rests on the Yatta Plateau and its vegetation is nourished by the waters of the Galana River.

How to Access the Park

The easiest way to enter this wonderful wildlife home is by road and there are a number of routes to follow. If you expect to arrive via the Nairobi route, you can use the Mtito Andei Gates which are exactly two hundred and thirty three kilometers in the south of Nairobi. If you will enter Kenya via Mombasa city there is more than one route. The Mtito Andei Gate is about two hundred and fifty kilometers north of Mombasa. The Mtito Andei/Voi route is ninety six kilometers and Voi/Mombasa route is One hundred and fifty three kilometers. From Malindi via the C103(western road) you can enter Tsavo East via Sala Gate. There are also airstrips located in Voi, Aruba, Mopeo, Ithumba and so on.

What you need to bring, things to do and things to see

The entry requirement is just park fees that can only be paid using a SafariCard alone. The things you can see include the dust red elephants playing and dipping in blue waters of the Galana River. The Aruba Dam is situated on the north bank of Voi River and is a great gathering place for animals. The Mudanda Rock is a very huge tower just above the above mentioned dam from where tourists can view the elephant herds. Other animals viewable during your Tsavo East safari include buffalos, lions, leopards, rhinos and others.
